There are a lot of new TV shows being released on streaming platforms this time of year. If you want a break from the obvious choices like House Of The Dragon or The Rings Of Power, we have gathered a varied selection of TV shows that might suit you better right now. Fantasy, true crime or period dramas, there is something on this list for everyone. Let’s take a look!
Night Sky (2022, IMDb M: 7.2 F: 7.6)
Fantasy and wacky adventures go hand-in-hand. In Night Sky, we are introduced to Franklin and Irene York who discovers a mysterious chamber buried in their backyard which leads to a bizarre and deserted planet. While determined to keep their discovery a secret, a young man enters their lives and the mysterious chamber proves to be much more than they had first thought. Night Sky is not just another sci-fi TV show, instead, it is a character-driven story that centers around fantasy and mystery, making it a great choice for a weekend binge-watching session.
Gaslit (2022, IMDb M: 7.1 F: 7.5)
Starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn, Gaslit tells the story of the Watergate Scandal from the perspective of forgotten characters and previously untold stories. While brilliantly capturing the aesthetic of the 1970s, this high-quality production explores an important part of American political history. Coupled with fantastic acting by the two lead actors, this new TV show is not one you would want to miss.
The Staircase (2022, IMDb M: 7.1 F: 7.2)
If you have seen the 2004 documentary about Micheal Peterson, you know what to expect from this new TV series. In short, American novelist Micheal Peterson is the suspected killer of his wife Kathleen, who is mysteriously found dead at the bottom of a staircase in their home. What followed was a 16-year trial to determine if Micheal is a murderer. This biographical drama is perfect for those who like true crime, and thanks to legendary Colin Firth and the ever-so-talented Toni Collette, we are guaranteed acting of the highest level.
The Serpent Queen (2022, IMDb M: 6.8 F: 8.2)
If satire and actors breaking the fourth wall is your cup of tea, then The Serpent Queen might be for you. Based on Leonie Frieda’s book “Catherine De Medici: Renaissance Queen of France”, this new TV mini-series is a look back at history with the purpose to entertain instead of recapturing history as it was. The story follows Catherine De Medicis as she marries her way into the French royal family. In other words, a wicked period drama series worth watching.
