IMDb is a data website for movies and TV shows that most of us use on a daily basis. It’s a great tool to read up on interesting movies and TV shows as well as tapping into the discussions about different topics by fellow movie nerds. Many use the website as a first indication of how good or bad a movie is, and by some unwritten law, a movie with a rating of under seven seems to be recognized as a mediocre or bad movie. Well, that’s not always completely true. To get you out of your comfort zone and explore more content, take a look at this list of great movies with low IMDb ratings that are definitely worth watching!

High Life (2018, IMDb: 5.8)
If you enjoy melancholy and slower paced sci-fi dramas, High Life will prove to be a good match for you. Robert Pattison plays a father who, together with his young daughter, struggle to survive following a storm of cosmic rays hitting their ship in deep space. This is a visually stunning movie that carries a heartfelt message at its core. Mesmerizing and thought-provoking, High Life is definitely a great movie with a low IMDb rating.
Personal Shopper (2017, IMDb: 6.1)
With a more than decent score from critics, Personal Shopper is a unique and engaging story worth watching. In this mystery-thriller, Kristen Stewart stars as Maureen, a personal shopper in Paris who refuses to leave the city until she makes contact with her dead twin brother. Stories about ghosts tend to be quite unrealistic, but this movie makes a pretty good effort in bringing ghosts to life. In other words, a chilling movie far away from any horror you’ve seen previously.
You Were Never Really Here (2018, IMDb: 6.7)
Rated just below the socially accepted IMDb score of seven, we find this crime-drama starring one of Hollywood's most profound actors. The story follows Joe, a traumatized Gulf War veteran, who finds work as a hired gun. He tracks down missing girls and gives justice to their captures. When the 13-year-old daughter of a New York senator never returns home, Joe sets out to find her. But soon, his nightmares overtake him and the job spins out of control. This is a compelling story about abused and tortured souls, and definitely a movie that deserves a higher rating.

Spiderhead (2022, IMDb: 5.4)
One trick to not judge a movie too fast is to watch it without any expectations. If you do so, you’ll find gold within those lower rated movies. One of which is this Netflix original. Spiderhead is a crime-drama starring Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller. Teller plays a convict who volunteers as a medical subject instead of going to prison. Soon, he discovers that he and his fellow inmates are test patients for a new pharmaceutical capable of alternating feelings. In short, Spiderhead is an entertaining and thrilling movie worth watching on a lazy afternoon.
I’m Thinking Of Ending Things (2020, IMDb: 6.6)
This movie divided its viewers into two groups, those who loved it and those who didn’t understand anything. To be honest, it’s a bizarre and slightly intimidating thriller that, at times, can be hard to understand. Like a nightmarish dream. But that’s this movie's charm. The story follows a young woman who travels with her new boyfriend to his parent’s farm. As the night progresses, she starts to question everything she knew about him. And herself. Jesse Plemons gives a wonderful performance, making this movie worth watching even though its lower IMDb rating.
Ad Astra (2019, IMDb: 6.5)
If you are a fan of visually stunning and breathtaking movies, Ad Astra is an obvious choice. This is not your typical space-blockbuster, but a slower paced and thought-provoking space drama that centers around depression and dealing with loss. Astronaut Roy McBride sets out across the solar system to uncover the truth about his lost father who’s mission now threatens the entire universe. This is a must-watch if you enjoy fascinating stories and family relationships.
Red Sparrow (2018, IMDb: 6.6)
Red Sparrow seems to be one of those movies that truly doesn’t deserve its low IMDb rating. In this spy thriller, you’ll experience a tense and constantly hostile atmosphere. Jennifer Lawrence plays a former Russian ballerina who is recruited to Sparrow School. There, she is trained but mostly forced to learn how to use her body as a weapon. Her first mission and target is a C.I.A. agent played by Joel Edgerton. In short, a gripping and gritty spy thriller worth watching right now.
The Lost City Of Z (2017, IMDb: 6.6)
One reason for the low rating on The Lost City Of Z could be that this is much more than just an adventure movie. Some may not have expected what this movie gave them. Based on a true story, we follow British explorer Percival Fawcett as he disappeared whilst looking for a mysterious city in the Amazon. The Lost City Of Z is indeed an adventure movie, but at the same time the portrait of a lost man. It’s slower paced, intriguing and well acted. Yet another movie that deserves a higher IMDb rating.
The Vast Of Night (2020, IMDb: 6.7)
Looking for a mystery-thriller you haven’t seen before? Here it is. This hidden gem is set in the late 1950s when a radio DJ discovers a strange audio frequency which could change the future forever. The Vast Of Night is an original and unique story that proves that good movies can be made despite a tight budget. It is nostalgic yet refreshing. In other words, a great movie to watch regardless of its lower rating.
