Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022, IMDb: 7.8)

We sure love a bit of nostalgia when a cold gets the better of us. In this latest adaptation of the beloved story of Pinocchio, Guillermo del Toro puts his own twist on the classic. Using stop motion animation, Del Toro’s Pinocchio takes place in Italy under Benito Mussolini’s rule. This is one of the highest praised movies of 2022 for good reason. To summarize, a sweet but emotional story on grief and what it takes to be a good person…even though you are made of wood.

Netflix

The Swimmers (2022, IMDb: 7.4)

This hidden gem from this past year is seriously good, and one you should watch now that you have some time to spend. Sisters Yusra and Sarah fled Syria in 2015 when their house was destroyed in the civil war. Their incredible journey as refugees soon sees them compete in two swimming events at the Rio Olympics as part of the Refugee Olympic team. This is a larger-than-life true story that will inspire you. Also, it shines light on the struggles of fleeing your home and trying to find a better life. In other words, an educational and important movie to watch.

Netflix

Against The Ice (2022, IMDb 6.5)

You can never go wrong with watching a dramatic adventure when stuck at home. Against The Ice stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Joe Cole as the two explorers who in 1909 had to fight to survive when they were left behind on an expedition in ice-covered Greenland. Based on a true story, this is a solid movie that will keep you engaged from start to end. When you thought no one could feel worse than you right now, these two explorers definitely wished they could join you on your sofa instead of fighting the cold and harsh environment on Greenland.

Cha Cha Real Smooth (2022, IMDb: 7.3)

Cha Cha Real Smooth was the surprise of the year in our opinion. Romcoms may not be everyone's cup of tea, but this movie is a refreshing addition to the genre that we think most can enjoy. Cooper Raiff plays a young man who works as a Bar Mitzvah party host. He strikes up an unusual friendship with a mother, played by Dakota Johnson, and her autistic daughter. Sweet and heartwarming, this movie offers the right amount of tears and laughs you expect from a classic romcom. In other words, a great movie to watch when you are home alone and sick.

The Greatest Beer Run Ever (2022, IMDb: 6.8)

If we told you that this story actually happened, you wouldn’t believe us. But it is actually true! The Greatest Beer Run Ever truly lives up to its title. Zac Efron plays Chickie Donohue, a young man tired of being stuck at home while his friends are off fighting the war in Vietnam. One day, he decides to bring his friends a can of beer. A fun and entertaining adventure perfect to watch and pass time while being sick. Maybe you can inspire your friends to bring you a beer, or a cup of tea. Whatever floats your boat.

This one goes out to the families or kids who are sick and stuck at home. Turning Red is an animated adventure-comedy about a 13-year-old girl named Meilin who turns into a giant red panda whenever she gets too excited. This movie got it all. Funny, heart-warming, heart-breaking but most importantly very entertaining. In short, this is a movie for the entire family to enjoy together.

What’s better than a wicked comedy to lift your spirits when sick at home? Starring a few of the biggest names in Hollywood, Amsterdam is set in the 1930s and follows three friends who witness a murder and are framed for it. Combining period drama with comedy, this movie makes history actually entertaining. Inspired by a true story, the three friends soon uncover one of the most shocking secret plots in American history.
